The GrowGear 4’x4’ GrowKit is an affordable, high quality home growing kit designed for growing 4 to 8 medicinal cannabis plants indoors.
We sourced the highest quality components we could find because product quality and user experience are still important.
GrowGear’s GrowKit includes everything a beginner grower needs for their first grow except seeds/clones, grow medium (eg. soil) and nutrients (our community and documentation can guide you through the options available for these essential items).
We designed and built the kit for new growers while simultaneously making it powerful enough for experienced growers and for beginners to grow into.
Below is the full list of all the components in our GrowKit in order of importance to your grow. Each component is explained through these four points:
There are some items that we did not include for a few reasons:
Items you probably already have (or may not need):
Items that growers choose individually:
Other items:
The most critical component of a grow kit for a successful grow is the amount of plant usable light your plants receive from the light source.
For maximum growth capturing the full CO2 levels of the great outdoors (400ppm) a full spectrum LED light source mimicking the suns wavelengths needs to output 600ppm umols.
After hours of temperature, humidity and light output testing at various distances from your plants we have chosen an LED light source that achieves the maximum growth potential of your plants in a CO2-neutral environment without wasting energy or generating too much heat. It’s a delicate balance between these factors and we nailed it.
We have chosen a light optimized for plant growth at normal CO2 levels that doesn’t create so much heat that the ventilation system can’t maintain tent temperature at 30C in a room temperature external environment
The inline exhaust fan regulates the temperature inside the tent by pulling warm air from the tent through a carbon filter (capturing odours and dust) and sending it outside of the tent. When warm odourless air is expelled from the tent the resulting vacuum pulls in cooler fresh air from the room through the vents at the bottom of the tent to feed the plants.
Air ventilation equipment is critically important to an indoor grow as it is responsible for helping maintain an optimal environment of humidity and temperature for your plants to maximize growth potential. The inline exhaust fan is the centerpiece of your ventilation system as it pulls air through the carbon filter and pushes it out of the tent via the insulated ducting (both supplied with kit).
The optimal temperature for growing cannabis is 30 degrees Celsius, any hotter and growth is stifled.
Odour control is also of great concern to many growers (or to the co-inhabitants of the dwelling) and the inline exhaust fan does the work of pulling those odours into the charcoal bed of the carbon filter.
We chose this particular fan for the following reasons:

Your grow tent is critical for maintaining a separation between your controlled grow environment inside the tent and the outside environment of the room the tent is in.
It houses your plants in their pots as well as the suspended LED lighting system and air handling system (inline exhaust fan, carbon filter, insulated ducting).
A grow tent is necessary to be able to maintain temperature and humidity levels inside the tent and to keep contaminants out (like things that pets might carry in from outdoors).
We went with industry-leading 1680D thickness material for the improved reflectivity it provides, elimination of pinholes common with 600D thickness and for the sturdier poles to support the weight of our LED light and air handling system.
The 1 main front door and 2 side watering doors design enable the tent to fit in any room while maintaining easy access to all of the plants.
The inline carbon filter attaches directly to your inline exhaust fan and is responsible for filtering out particulate matter and odours from your grow environment before the fan sends the cleaned air out of your tent.
Because your marriage, co-habitation relationships and neighbourly relations are important. Not everyone wants to smell your cannabis plants and you probably don’t want them to smell your plants either. Win-win.
Odour is a common concern and for good reason, cannabis plants smell and it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. In conjunction with the inline exhaust fan and air ducting system, the carbon filter absorbs those odours for your benefit.
We sized the air flow of our filter to our inline exhaust fan and sourced the highest quality unit for the money that we could find from our factory visits.
The clip fan creates air flow and turbulence inside the grow tent to enhance plant growth at all stages of your plants life cycle.
Air flow is critical for all three stages of your plant’s growth:
We went with the proven Secret Jardin 20W Oscillating Monkey Fan for your GrowKit because it is electrically safe, affordable and provides enough air flow to do the job at all stages of plant growth.
Many of the fans on Amazon do not have ETL or UL and could leave homeowners at risk for insurance purposes if they are the source of a fire.
Temperature / Humidity Sensors are necessary for a grow as they can provide you a steady stream of information on the environment both inside your grow tent and also the room the grow tent is in (we supply two units for this purpose).
Medicinal cannabis plants have an optimal temperature and humidity range that they prefer for each stage of growth. When you maintain your tent in this range your plants will thrive. If your grow environment drifts outside this range due to environmental factors inside and/or outside your tent then you may experience issues.
Consider these devices as your early warning detection system with historical information direct to your smart phone.
We chose this particular unit for it’s ease of use, size, historical data (with charting) and battery lifespan.
The 3-in-1 Digital pH EC/TDS Temperature Meter gives you insight into your water and water/nutrient solution quality before you apply it to your plants.
The different functions are:
We tested multiple manufacturers for reliability, functionality, accuracy and usability and this one came out on top.
It’s also more bang for the buck to pay a bit more to have multiple functions in one device than to pay less for multiple individual function devices.
We tested the standard Amazon/China analog meters from the major source used by others and found them to be of unacceptable quality.
We instead chose a brand that is known for it’s build quality, price and user friendliness.
Ducting carries the filtered air from the inline exhaust fan out of the tent.
Ducting carries the filtered air from the inline exhaust fan out of the tent.
This is a critical and often overlooked piece of equipment for all growers. It is used for two main purposes:
We found the common Amazon/China microscopes to be completely useless and instead settled on the tried and true jewellers loupe. The lens is large enough to comfortably see your plants without squinting and you can even take photos through it to share with others to help you with any issues or decisions surrounding your grow and harvest.
Trimming your plants regularly trains your plants to spend their energy where you want it to go and not where it’s wasted energy. As your plant grows it produces a lot of leaves and good trimming scissors allow you to channel your inner bonsai tree pruner to clear away lower leaves forcing your plant to put more energy into growing large potent flowers (buds).
During harvest the same trimming scissors are used to
Our top priorities in choosing trimming scissors were durability, functionality/usability. Grip is important as is size and style with all those different sized fingers and hands out there.
We included two pairs primarily for the harvest portion of your grow as either A. you have a friend to help you harvest or B. you do not want to be slowed down to clean that wonderful but gummy cannabis oil off your scissors in the middle of the harvest
It’s important to have a separate space / environment for your seedlings to start their journey which will save you some time in getting your next crop going.
The 12” dome is key for those fast growing seedlings in taller solo cups while they are developing a solid root ball.
The key
We include 2 sizes of pot for the two stages of growth:
We chose the thickest and strongest natural material we could find.
One of the benefits of your LED grow light vs. legacy HPS or metal halide grow lights is that they give off considerably less heat. This means you can position your LED grow light as close as 6”-12” from the top of your plants which is not possible with HPS or metal halide lamps that could scorch your plants at a distance less than 24”.
The rachet straps allow you to move your light up as your plants grow so they can capture the maximum amount of plant friendly light wavelengths (the closer the light is to the plant the more intense the light output/food for your plants).
There are a few options in the market and these ones have proven to be reliable in our field testing to date.
We know how daunting growing can seem to be for a first timer so we created the following documents:
