The Kit

The GrowGear 4’x4’ GrowKit is an affordable, high quality home growing kit designed for growing 4 to 8 medicinal cannabis plants indoors.

We sourced the highest quality components we could find because product quality and user experience are still important.

What is included?

GrowGear’s GrowKit includes everything a beginner grower needs for their first grow except seeds/clones, grow medium (eg. soil) and nutrients (our community and documentation can guide you through the options available for these essential items).

We designed and built the kit for new growers while simultaneously making it powerful enough for experienced growers and for beginners to grow into.

Below is the full list of all the components in our GrowKit in order of importance to your grow. Each component is explained through these four points:

  • What does it do?
  • Why is it important?
  • Why did we choose this one?
  • Tech Specs

Full Spectrum LED Grow Light

What does it do?

The most critical component of a grow kit for a successful grow is the amount of plant usable light your plants receive from the light source.

Why is it important?

For maximum growth capturing the full CO2 levels of the great outdoors (400ppm) a full spectrum LED light source mimicking the suns wavelengths needs to output 600ppm umols.

Why did we choose this one?

After hours of temperature, humidity and light output testing at various distances from your plants we have chosen an LED light source that achieves the maximum growth potential of your plants in a CO2-neutral environment without wasting energy or generating too much heat. It’s a delicate balance between these factors and we nailed it.

We have chosen a light optimized for plant growth at normal CO2 levels that doesn’t create so much heat that the ventilation system can’t maintain tent temperature at 30C in a room temperature external environment

Tech Specs

  • 440W 2.7μmol/J full spectrum LED grow light
  • Osram SSL 120 GH CSSPM1.24-4T2U-1-1-L (hyper red 660nm) LED chips
  • Philips Lumileds 2835R Series (white) LED chips
  • 0-100% dimmability
  • Replaceable driver
  • 100-277V AC ,50/60Hz

Inline Exhaust Fan (with Manual Speed Controller)

What does it do?

The inline exhaust fan regulates the temperature inside the tent by pulling warm air from the tent through a carbon filter (capturing odours and dust) and sending it outside of the tent. When warm odourless air is expelled from the tent the resulting vacuum pulls in cooler fresh air from the room through the vents at the bottom of the tent to feed the plants.

Why is it important?

Air ventilation equipment is critically important to an indoor grow as it is responsible for helping maintain an optimal environment of humidity and temperature for your plants to maximize growth potential. The inline exhaust fan is the centerpiece of your ventilation system as it pulls air through the carbon filter and pushes it out of the tent via the insulated ducting (both supplied with kit).
The optimal temperature for growing cannabis is 30 degrees Celsius, any hotter and growth is stifled.
Odour control is also of great concern to many growers (or to the co-inhabitants of the dwelling) and the inline exhaust fan does the work of pulling those odours into the charcoal bed of the carbon filter.

Why did we choose this one?

We chose this particular fan for the following reasons:

  • The automated temperature control and thermal probe allows the grower to “set and forget” the fan to maintain a target temperature 24/7/365.
  • The EC brushless motor technology is unique in the industry delivering a silent and efficient operating environment vs. the standard AC fans in the home grower market
  • The build quality is superior to all the other “made-in-China” inline fans that make up the majority of the beginner grower market (ie. fans on Amazon). We tested the common ones and they all disappointed. The cost of our fan is 3x more than the first fans we tested and rejected. We feel the cost is worth it for worry-free user experience.
  • The majority of fans in the market have one speed, are loud, heavy and require additional timers to turn them on and off on a schedule.

Tech Specs

  • 6” (150mm) 40W EC inline fan with 6-poles brushless DC motor
  • 6 speed manual / automatic temperature sensor operated fan speed controller
  • Air flow – 594M3H / 350CFM
  • Cold rolled steel housing with double impellers
  • ETL electrical certification
  • 110V~120V (North & South America), 220V~240V (Europe, Australasia)

  • Static pressure – 500Pa
  • 5000RPM max speed
  • Weight – 1.6kgs
  • 2-year warranty

4’x4’x7’ Reflective Grow Tent

What does it do?

Your grow tent is critical for maintaining a separation between your controlled grow environment inside the tent and the outside environment of the room the tent is in.

It houses your plants in their pots as well as the suspended LED lighting system and air handling system (inline exhaust fan, carbon filter, insulated ducting).

Why is it important?

A grow tent is necessary to be able to maintain temperature and humidity levels inside the tent and to keep contaminants out (like things that pets might carry in from outdoors).

Why did we choose this one?

We went with industry-leading 1680D thickness material for the improved reflectivity it provides, elimination of pinholes common with 600D thickness and for the sturdier poles to support the weight of our LED light and air handling system.

The 1 main front door and 2 side watering doors design enable the tent to fit in any room while maintaining easy access to all of the plants.

Tech Specs

  • 4’x4’x7’ physical size as assembled
  • 16mm large diameter poles for extra rigidity and support
  • 1680D thickness mylar reflective tent fabric
  • 1 front door and 2 side watering doors
  • Multiple cord and exhaust ports with double layered cinching for air flow control
  • 2 rectangular air intake vents at the bottom of the tent
  • 1 viewing window in the front door
  • Double stitched zippers
  • 1-year warranty

Inline Carbon Filter

What does it do?

The inline carbon filter attaches directly to your inline exhaust fan and is responsible for filtering out particulate matter and odours from your grow environment before the fan sends the cleaned air out of your tent.

Why is it important?

Because your marriage, co-habitation relationships and neighbourly relations are important. Not everyone wants to smell your cannabis plants and you probably don’t want them to smell your plants either. Win-win.

Odour is a common concern and for good reason, cannabis plants smell and it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. In conjunction with the inline exhaust fan and air ducting system, the carbon filter absorbs those odours for your benefit.

Why did we choose this one?

We sized the air flow of our filter to our inline exhaust fan and sourced the highest quality unit for the money that we could find from our factory visits.

Tech Specs

  • Carbon Filter 6″ x 16″
  • 38mm (1.5”) thick carbon bed
  • 100% Virgin Australian charcoal
  • 400CFM flow rate
  • 1st stage foam mesh filter sock for larger particulate matter
  • Inline fan connection – Inside diameter 150mm (6”)

Secret Jardin Clip Fan

What does it do?

The clip fan creates air flow and turbulence inside the grow tent to enhance plant growth at all stages of your plants life cycle.

Why is it important?

Air flow is critical for all three stages of your plant’s growth:

  • Sproutling Stage – Blowing light wind at your young plants (ie. 6-12” tall plants) forces them to grow a sturdy stem that will support the large plant you’ll be able to grow with your GrowKit
  • Vegetative Stage – Blowing air at the stems and plants at this stage has the same strengthening effect on the stems and also ensures the CO2 and humidity is distributed evenly around your plants to prevent issues like mould and powdery mildew.
  • Flowering Stage – Air flow is required at this stage because medicinal cannabis plants pollinate through the air instead of needing bees like other plants. For the female plants to receive pollen from the males they need to grow big buds (flower) and direct air flow helps induce strong flower growth.

Why did we choose this one?

We went with the proven Secret Jardin 20W Oscillating Monkey Fan for your GrowKit because it is electrically safe, affordable and provides enough air flow to do the job at all stages of plant growth.

Many of the fans on Amazon do not have ETL or UL and could leave homeowners at risk for insurance purposes if they are the source of a fire.

Govee Bluetooth Temperature / Humidity Sensor

What does it do?

Temperature / Humidity Sensors are necessary for a grow as they can provide you a steady stream of information on the environment both inside your grow tent and also the room the grow tent is in (we supply two units for this purpose).

Why is it important?

Medicinal cannabis plants have an optimal temperature and humidity range that they prefer for each stage of growth. When you maintain your tent in this range your plants will thrive. If your grow environment drifts outside this range due to environmental factors inside and/or outside your tent then you may experience issues.

Consider these devices as your early warning detection system with historical information direct to your smart phone.

Why did we choose this one?

We chose this particular unit for it’s ease of use, size, historical data (with charting) and battery lifespan.

Digital pH EC TDS Temperature Meter

What does it do?

The 3-in-1 Digital pH EC/TDS Temperature Meter gives you insight into your water and water/nutrient solution quality before you apply it to your plants.

The different functions are:

  • pH Meter – measures the acidity/alkalinity of your water to ensure it’s within the optimum range for your plants to grow easily
  • EC / TDS Meter (Electrical Conductivity / Total Dissolved Solids) – two fancy words used interchangeably to describe the level of nutrients you have dissolved in your water (or the level of unknown particles in your water before you even add nutrients)
  • Temperature Meter – a simple feature to ensure you are not shocking your plants with water that is too cold or too hot

Why is it important?

Water quality is a key factor in how well your plants will perform. City water, rural well water, reverse osmosis water, soft/hard water are all different and can produce different results. It’s important to know what you are dealing with so you can optimize your own grow.

Why did we choose this one?

We tested multiple manufacturers for reliability, functionality, accuracy and usability and this one came out on top.

It’s also more bang for the buck to pay a bit more to have multiple functions in one device than to pay less for multiple individual function devices.

Tech Specs

  • pH range: 0.00~14.00pH
  • EC range: 0~19990us/cm (0~19.9ms/cm)
  • TDS range: 0~19990ppm (0~9.9ppt)

Digital Timer Plugs

What does it do?

Digital Timer Plugs empower the grower with some automation for operating their light schedule and their clip fan schedule. Other grow kits without an automated inline exhaust fan like ours would need to also use a timer plug on that.

Why is it important?

Being able to automate certain parts of your grow will save you time so you can attend to other aspects of growing like watering, trimming and watching out for any irregularities in your plants.

Why did we choose this one?

We tested the standard Amazon/China analog meters from the major source used by others and found them to be of unacceptable quality.

We instead chose a brand that is known for it’s build quality, price and user friendliness.

Tech Specs

  • 1-minute on/off
  • Controls 2 outlets simultaneously
  • 15 amps
  • Up to 8 on/off cycles per day
  • 7-day scheduling
  • 120V UL certified

PVC Coated Ducting

What does it do?

Ducting carries the filtered air from the inline exhaust fan out of the tent.

Why is it important?

Insulated ducting has the additional benefit of deadening the sound from the grow kit. Many growers (or their co-habitants) would rather not have to hear a noisy exhaust fan in the background at their home. Our silent exhaust fan coupled with insulated ducting creates an industry leading low noise environment for the everyday grower.

Why did we choose this one?

It’s insulated ducting, it’s simply acoustically superior to regular non-insulated ducting.

Tech Specs

  • 12’ long
  • 1’ thick
  • 6” diameter

Handheld Microscope

What does it do?

Ducting carries the filtered air from the inline exhaust fan out of the tent.

Why is it important?

This is a critical and often overlooked piece of equipment for all growers. It is used for two main purposes:

  • Plant issues – with a high powered hand held microscope device the user is able to identify issues such as powdery mildew, spider mites and nutrient / water imbalances
  • Harvest time – the ideal time to harvest your plants is when the tiny hair like trichomes on your plants buds are a beautiful amber gold colour. This indicates that the terpenes in your buds are at peak flavour as well as the cannibanoid content is at it’s maximum. You need a quality microscope to see this turning point of nature.

Why did we choose this one?

We found the common Amazon/China microscopes to be completely useless and instead settled on the tried and true jewellers loupe. The lens is large enough to comfortably see your plants without squinting and you can even take photos through it to share with others to help you with any issues or decisions surrounding your grow and harvest.

Tech Specs

  • 40x magnification
  • Aluminum frame
  • LED light
  • Battery operated

Trimming Scissors

What does it do?

Trimming Scissors are used throughout your grow for trimming and used intensely at the end of your grow during the harvesting process

Why is it important?

Trimming your plants regularly trains your plants to spend their energy where you want it to go and not where it’s wasted energy. As your plant grows it produces a lot of leaves and good trimming scissors allow you to channel your inner bonsai tree pruner to clear away lower leaves forcing your plant to put more energy into growing large potent flowers (buds).

During harvest the same trimming scissors are used to

Why did we choose this one?

Our top priorities in choosing trimming scissors were durability, functionality/usability. Grip is important as is size and style with all those different sized fingers and hands out there.

We included two pairs primarily for the harvest portion of your grow as either A. you have a friend to help you harvest or B. you do not want to be slowed down to clean that wonderful but gummy cannabis oil off your scissors in the middle of the harvest

Tech Specs

  • Spring action scissors that push open after each cut
  • Rubberized no-slip grip
  • Needle point blade ends to trim in as close to buds as possible

High Dome Propagation Tray Combo

What does it do?

Your propagation tray and dome provides a warm and humid environment for your seedlings up to 12” in height before you move them to the big tent.

Why is it important?

It’s important to have a separate space / environment for your seedlings to start their journey which will save you some time in getting your next crop going.

The 12” dome is key for those fast growing seedlings in taller solo cups while they are developing a solid root ball.

Why did we choose this one?

The key

  • 12” high dome
  • Tray with space for ~8 seedlings in seedling tray or in solo cups (solo cups not included)
  • Seedling tray

1 and 5 Gallon Fabric Pots

What does it do?

Your GrowKit includes two different sizes of fabric pots that hold your grow medium (like soil) throughout your grow.

Why is it important?

We include 2 sizes of pot for the two stages of growth:

  • * 1 gallon – after seedling stage we use the 1 gallon pot to help train the plant to create a strong concentrated root ball
  • 5 gallon – once the roots are solid enough to support large plant the plant can be transplanted into the 5 gallon pots for the remainder of the grow

Why did we choose this one?

We chose the thickest and strongest natural material we could find.

Tech Specs

  • 5 pieces x 1 gallon pot

Rachet Straps

What does it do?

Rachet straps (or pynch pulley hangers) give you the ability to raise and lower your LED grow light in particular as well as parts of your

Why is it important?

One of the benefits of your LED grow light vs. legacy HPS or metal halide grow lights is that they give off considerably less heat. This means you can position your LED grow light as close as 6”-12” from the top of your plants which is not possible with HPS or metal halide lamps that could scorch your plants at a distance less than 24”.

The rachet straps allow you to move your light up as your plants grow so they can capture the maximum amount of plant friendly light wavelengths (the closer the light is to the plant the more intense the light output/food for your plants).

Why did we choose this one?

There are a few options in the market and these ones have proven to be reliable in our field testing to date.

Tech Specs

  • Kit includes 4 pairs of ratchet straps (8 ratchet straps)
  • Each pair (2) can support 150lbs (68kg)
  • Metal hardware and caribiner
  • 8’ braided polypropylene rope
  • Heat resistant composite ratchet mechanism housing
  • Single press release button for easy lowering by one person
  • Single-handed pull mechanism for easy raising by one person

Power Strip/Bar and Extension Cord

What does it do?

The Power strip/bar and extension cord are used to get power into your tent and to provide enough outlets for the devices in the kit as well as some future devices you might add along your growing journey.

Why is it important?

There are multiple 120V (or 220V depending on your country) devices that need to be powered including the inline fan and the LED grow light.

Why did we choose this one?

We chose a cord / power bar that has UL safety certification for your protection and to ensure the equipment has achieved a certain level of quality.

Tech Specs

  • 5 North American plug hole outlets
  • 15’ of cord length
  • USB outlets for powering the clip fans
